Although most road signs are universal, some are specific to Japan.
In particular, take care to remember the ones written only in Japanese.
The colour and shape of a sign determine its meaning.
In order to drive, it is important to understand the rules written on road signs.
There are three types of road signs in Japan. The first type offer guidance to drivers, including directions, locations, route numbers. These are blue on regular roads, and green on toll roads. The yellow triangular signs are warnings of danger and indicate areas of caution. Finally there are signs which specify rules of driving, such as the speed limit and where you have to stop. These signs are round, or in the shape of an upside down triangle. It is particularly important to be aware of signs indicating traffic laws. Generally speaking, a red sign or an “X” indicates something is forbidden, while blue means that it is allowed. The Japanese word for STOP is “止まれ”. Make sure to remember this. When you see a number written in a red circle, it indicates the speed limit. If you get caught for breaking a law, you will not be able to enjoy the rest of your trip. Make sure to remember the rules for your own safety and fun!
